about

By Patrick Clifford (ASCAP)

lyrics

A wind to the west washed over me
And my spirit, borne aloft the sea,
Struggling, hovered over the strand
To look back once more upon this gentle land.
My thoughts, like myself, always fleeting, arrive leaving,
Tossed between tides of having and grieving.
But this one wish I'll keep till it makes my heart sore:
To stand once again on your green western shore

And fond are the thoughts I'll recall of her
On the cradling waves, the thrashing storms:
Of our walks along the waters and dunes of Rossbeigh,
When I first felt her tears of farewell so warm.
With so pure a voice as an angel from heaven
She sang of love so sweet, 'twould make a man skip.
It took but a moment, I pledged her my heart—
I held her hand, she kissed my lips.

But it's the love of no lady that begs me to stay—
No miracle or mission o'er me holds sway,
But the soft rain on the fields,
The breeze at my back where I stand,
And this sandy hollow of God's holy hand.

And the leaves in these winds that wash over us
In tide and ebb forever they'll toss,
To change in time but forever to be,
Like distant love and sweet memory.
Now down in Dingle my ship's sails are full;
I'll soon feel again the waves roll and pull.
Though my eyes will weep, my heart will soar
To gaze as we sail from this green western shore.
